7. A Birthdate in Dennis Buggy's Death Certificate

Dennis Buggy’s 1915 death certificate provides the following information about his birth: [1]

Informant: Richard Buggy

This document confirms the birthdate of June 1830 from the 1900 census.[2]  It was not created at or near the time of Dennis Buggy’s birth by a person in a position to know the information firsthand, so its reliability depends on the informant.  It contradicts the Phelan book’s 1833 birth year.[3]

The certificate gives Dennis’ date of death as May 20, 1915, and his age as 84 years, 11 months, 22 days.   This calculates to a birthdate of 28 May 1830.  The discrepancy could result from faulty calculation, either at the time of death or with present electronic tools.

It’s important to notice that the person who gave the information about Dennis Buggy was his son Richard, with whom he had lived the whole of his son’s life.  Richard probably knew the date his father celebrated his birthday, and he probably knew how old he thought he was.  The lack of information he was able to give about his grandparents may be attributed to the stress of his father’s death.  Surely he knew that he had been named after his father’s father.

Dennis Buggy’s death certificate gives a full date for his birth, a specific date to work with when researching in Irish records.  It is only as reliable as Dennis’ and his son’s memories, but it’s a help.

6. Dennis Buggy: Hunting for a Marriage Record

Why find a marriage record?

Occasionally, not always, a marriage record will specify a place of birth.  It’s important to look for that record, in case it’s the glorious exception that solves the problem.

Starting Point

The Phelan family book claims that Dennis Buggy and Catherine Phelan were married in Naugatuck, Connecticut, 17 January 1856. [1]  The first U. S. Census for Naugatuck after that date, 1860, seems to confirm this.  Although relationships among household members are not indicated in this census, Dennis is living with Catherine and two boys, Richard (three) and John (one).[2]  Richard’s age and a year for pregnancy backtrack well to a marriage in 1856.  The 1900 U. S. Census asked how many years a person had been married.  Dennis and Catherine responded “45,” which, given the census date of 1 June, calculates back to May 1855 at the latest.[3]  They seem to have rounded up six months.

Places to Look for an Official Record

FamilySearch Because FamilySearch is digitizing and putting records online every day, that’s a first place to look for Dennis Buggy’s marriage record.  It’s not there—yet.[4]

NEHGS The New England Historic Genealogical Society has excellent databases of records from New England states and towns.  I expected to find the Naugatuck marriage record with no trouble, but the search was fruitless.[5]  A look at the list of databases represented explains why: Naugatuck is not there—yet.

Family History Library The Family History Library does have a microfilm of births, marriages, and deaths as recorded by the Naugatuck Town Clerk from 1844-1862, so I’ve ordered it to come to my local Family History Center.  More on that after it arrives.

The Family History Library also has church records from Naugatuck, but all are of Protestant denominations, and the Buggys were Catholic.  An online search for Naugatuck Catholic churches found St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Naugatuck.  Its Church History page explains, “The original tiny church of St. Francis began celebrating Mass in 1860 for a small community of faithful Catholics.”[6]  That would be four years after Dennis Buggy’s marriage, so he probably married in another nearby church.

Archdiocese of Hartford  The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hartford, Connecticut, should have information about what church that would be.  Their Archives page has a list of churches by city, and Naugatuck’s St. Francis is listed, so this is the correct parent organization. The Archives holds sacramental registers on microfilm for the Archdiocese’s 215 parishes, and “Genealogical requests should be in writing.” [7]

I wrote 25 March 2013 to Archivist Maria Medina (Archdiocese of Hartford, 134 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, CT 06105) to inquire about the marriage record for Dennis Buggy and Catherine Phelan.  Now I wait for a response.

5. Photographs of Dennis and Catherine Buggy

Several pages in the back of Dennis Buggy’s bible (see "Where Exactly Did You Come From, Dennis Buggy?" 24 March 2013) are fitted with cutouts to hold photographs.  All are empty but one.  It’s intriguing to think that the portraits may be of Dennis and Catherine (Phelan) Buggy.  It was their bible, after all.

Examining the photos and the clothing and correlating this information with what is known about Dennis and Catherine may give a tentative identification.

Cabinet cards like these (6 ½" x 4 ¼") were produced in the U.S. from 1866 through 1890.  They were called albumen prints for the egg whites used to develop the picture.[1]   That gives a time period to work with, and we know Dennis (ca. 1830-1915) and Catherine (ca. 1828-1906) were both living then.

The woman wears her hair plain, parted in the middle and pulled straight back, a style typical of 1866-1868, but likely worn well after that time, too.  The high neckline with a small stand-up collar and ruffles and the armholes over the shoulder place the costume between 1869-1874.[2]  If this is Catherine (Phelan) Buggy, she would have been about 37-45 as suggested by the costume.  Her face is consistent with this age.  She is simply dressed, not ostentatious.

The man’s wide necktie and narrow lapel on a coat buttoned high, along with his chin whiskers and ear-length hair, place his portrait later, about 1874-1880.[3]  He also appears to be older than the woman.  If it is Dennis Buggy, he would have been about 45-50, a reasonable age, maybe even young, for the sitter.

The photographer’s imprint, “Iver I. Floe, Photographer,” the same on both photos, suggests that they were taken at the same time.  There are two problems with this.  First, if it is Dennis and Catherine, the man and woman are of different ages, while Dennis and Catherine were about the same age.  In addition, Iver I. Floe immigrated to the U.S. in 1880, the latest year identified by the clothing.  He was about eighteen at that time and would not likely have had his own business as a young, recent immigrant.[4]

By 1895 Iver I. Floe was thirty-three, lived in Blue Earth, Faribault County, and worked as a photographer.[5]   If he had been in business during the previous decade, he would have created the albumen prints then.  This late date suggests that the portraits were reproductions of earlier photographs, printed on identical cardstock and appearing to be a matched pair.  This explains the different ages of the sitters, very likely Dennis and Catherine (Phelan) Buggy as photographed at different times earlier.

Comparing these photos with pictures known to be of Dennis and Catherine could solve the sitters’ identities.  Do you have a photo of Dennis or Catherine?

4. Dennis Buggy's Bible

4.  Dennis Buggy’s Bible

Dennis Buggy’s bible has turned up![1]  Discussion of vital records is on hold, as family-held records often contain the information we seek. This bible belonged to Dennis Buggy; his name is embossed on the cover.  Unfortunately it offers no information on Dennis’ birth.  Preprinted pages between the Old and New Testaments record family marriages beginning with daughter Nelly, births beginning with son Richard, and deaths beginning with wife Catherine.  The year given for Dennis Buggy’s death (1916) is different from the Phelan book (1915), throwing suspicion on both sources.  More information from other sources will eventually clear up the confusion.  Because this source of information is so valuable, I’ll discuss it in detail and share photos of it in the hope that someone will glean and carefully analyze the information for Buggy family history.

Dating the bible

Information found in a bible is generally the most accurate when it is entered at the time of the event, say, the day of or within days of that event.  Dating the bible and dating the entries determine the reliability of the information.

Dennis Buggy’s bible bears no date of publication, but a plate facing the title page is dedicated to Pope Leo XIII, whose reign began in 1878.  The first page of Calmet’s…Dictionary of the Bible, bound in the bible, bears a copyright of 1879.  A preprinted (blank) marriage certificate form bound with the birth, marriage, and death record pages, has a fill-in date “188__,” so the bible was surely published in 1880 or later.

Dating the information

Preprinted pages bound between the Old and New Testaments allow space for notation of marriages, births, and deaths.  Handwriting and ink indicate that at least two different people entered information in Dennis Buggy’s bible.

One person made the earliest entries as early as 1910 and as late as 1940.

            Black ink, one sitting: marriages 1885-1894 and births 1856-1910

            Same hand, blue ink, one sitting: marriages 1921-1929, deaths 1906-1940

Another hand used blue, ball point, and black ink to record entries closer to the time of the events: deaths 1951-1972, marriages 1951 and 1955, and births 1929-1961.

The entries made one at a time are more likely to be reliable than those entered all at once as if copied from another source or from family memory.  Comparing the dates with those from other sources will give reliable information.

Value for establishing Dennis Buggy’s birth

This bible offers no information about Dennis Buggy’s birth except one speculation:  It is an elegant, extravagant bible, probably very expensive, one that could have been offered as a gift.  Assuming that it was published in 1880 and that the 1830 date of Dennis Buggy’s death is correct, it could have been a fiftieth birthday present.

3. Dennis Buggy in Censuses

A published family history and online databases give conflicting information about Dennis Buggy’s birthdate (1830 or 1833) and one idea about a specific birthplace (Freshford, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland).  Federal and state censuses should give a good overview of Dennis Buggy’s life in the U. S. and offer ideas about his birthdate and birthplace.

The problem is, the more census schedules we find and examine, the more muddled the birthdate becomes.  Only the 1900 census gives a year and month of birth.  All the others give ages, so we calculate the birthdate from the age and the date of the census enumeration.[1]  All censuses agree on Ireland as Dennis’ birthplace, but none offers more specific information.

The 1900 census tells the month and year of birth of each individual enumerated.  Accuracy depends on the knowledge of the informant.  We don’t know the informant for Dennis Buggy’s household, so to accept June 1830 as his birthdate will require confirmation from other reliable sources.

The other censuses give a range of dates calculated to 1 June 1828-31 May 1833, a five-year span.  The informants could have been Dennis, his wife, any adult living in the household, or a neighbor.

The censuses offer other information, too.  Here are transcriptions in tabular format, sometimes abbreviated to save space, of Dennis Buggy’s federal and state census entries.  Notes about the entries give an idea of the wealth of information still to be incorporated into the Dennis Buggy story.

Dennis Buggy was twenty-eight, owned $500 of real property and $100 of personal property, and was born in Ireland.  Relationships to household members are not stated.  Living with Dennis were a possible wife, children, and two Buggy young men, possibly relatives.  The household enumerated immediately before his was that of Michael Butler.  The Phelan family book says Butler was Dennis’ mother’s maiden name.[3]  The families could have been related.

1870  I have not discovered Dennis Buggy in the 1870 U. S. census.  I have not made a line-by-line search in places where he might have lived.

Dennis was fifty-one, a farmer born in Ireland.  Catherine is now identified as his wife and Richard M., John H., and Catherine as his children, all born in Connecticut.  Nellie is not enumerated with the family.  The Dullard family enumerated immediately before the Buggys may be Dennis’ wife’s sister Bridget (Phelan) Dollard and family.[6]

Dennis was fifty-four, born in Ireland.  Both his father and his mother were foreign-born.  His children were born in Wisconsin, not Connecticut, suggesting that the informant was not a family member.

Dennis Buggy had been a private in Company K, 20^th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry.  He enlisted in September 1862 and was discharged in June 1865.

Dennis Buggy was born in June 1830 in Ireland.  He had been married forty-five years.  He immigrated in 1850, had lived in the U.S. fifty years, and was naturalized.  He was a farmer and owned his farm free and clear.  His wife, son Richard, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren all lived together on the farm.

Dennis was seventy-two, still farming, and son Richard now head of the household.  The enumerator confused Richard’s place of birth and jumped up a row, combining Dennis with his grandson Edward.  The census shows that Dennis and Catherine had resided forty years in this state and enumeration district, an indication of when they moved from Connecticut.

This is an abbreviated transcription.  Dennis, seventy-nine, a widower, resided with his son Richard and family.  He was born in Ireland, had immigrated in 1850, and was a naturalized citizen.

In summary, census records do not offer definitive information about Dennis Buggy's birthdate and birthplace other than Ireland. One suggests, but does not confirm, his June 1830 birth.


Next steps include seeking vital records for Dennis’ marriage and death.  They may offer useful birth information.
